Art Therapy

Our Master of Arts degree in Art Therapy trains professionals in the mental health field to use fine art as a catalyst for healing and self-actualization. Art therapy aids human development through self-discovery, self-awareness, and personal growth.

Our program will expose you to a variety of theories and approaches related to the do of fine art therapy and the field of psychology. Our Primary's degree in Art Therapy is Accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Centrolineal Wellness Instruction Programs (CAAHEP). It prepares you for:

  • Registration (ATR)
  • Board Certification (BC) with the Art Therapy Credentials Board (ATCB)

Mission Statement

The Graduate Art Therapy Plan at Marywood University is built upon artistic, ethical, and spiritual values within a tradition of service to humankind. Our art therapy plan provides a supportive framework for the enhancement of students' capacity to apply the therapeutic qualities of art making with a wide variety of populations. With this focus, at that place is an ongoing delivery to the integration of students' learning domains in the areas of personal artistic growth, academic study, multicultural awareness and development of clinical skills to prepare competent entry-level Art Therapists in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (beliefs) learning domains to enter the job market.

Housed inside the Fine art Department of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Art Therapy Plan at Marywood University offers the an fine art based, humanistic approach taught by kinesthesia who take broad ranges of expertise, are deeply committed to the profession of art therapy and strive toward the development of compassionate and competent hereafter practitioners. The Graduate Fine art Therapy Program educates students and then that they may serve as therapists with a profound appreciation of each homo being in our interdependent earth.

Course Offerings

The Marywood Principal of Arts in Art Therapy program runs sixty semester hours and follows the guidelines of the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Wellness Didactics Programs (CAAHEP). The core curriculum consists of courses in both Art Therapy and Psychology. Thirty-six credits in Fine art Therapy, nine credits in Psychology, and six credits in studio fine art are required. Sandtray

Annual Symposiums

Each year Marywood University's art therapy section hosts an Art Therapy Symposium. Graduate students, undergraduate students, art therapists, and other members of the community come together for a i twenty-four hour period event to acquire from presenters who are influential to the field of art therapy. Lecture and art experiential tasks are incorporated throughout the twenty-four hour period to enhance learning.  Past presenters include Catherine Moon, Stella Stepney, Bruce Moon, Harriet Wadeson, Janice Hoshino, Shaun McNiff, David Gussack, and many others.

MUSATA (Marywood University Art Therapy Association)

MUSATA is composed of graduate and undergraduate fine art therapy students with the support of the Marywood art therapy kinesthesia. The main purpose of this group is to network, share personal, creative, educational, and overall professional growth opportunities. This group strives to promote art therapy as a means of life improvement. Past Volunteer Events

MUSATA (Marywood University Student Fine art Therapy Association) attended the Northeast Suicide Prevention event that occurred on September 6th, 2014 at Linden Street located downtown Scranton, PA.   MUSATA members volunteered to assist with decorating the vine archway leading into the event.  Ribbons, quotes, and pictures were hung throughout the vine entrance to advocate for suicide prevention, forth with a memoriam wall of victims who had committed suicide. MUSATA Members also participated in the mile "Share the Journey" walk.

Later in the day there will exist an afternoon workshop that explores these themes by materializing through dirt, the I/Thou relational textures of the empathic imagination.

2013 Art Therapy Symposium

A Social Justice Approach to Art Therapy: Global to Local Perspectives

PROGRAM Description:
This symposium is focused on a social justice approach to art therapy that emphasizes reflexivity, power sharing, and cultural relevance. An ongoing projection to develop therapeutic arts programs in Kenya and Tanzania provides an example of the challenges and practical application of this model in an international context, while a community-based studio project in Chicago provides a model for how a social justice approach can be applied at the local level.
